child receiving polio vaccine from volunteer Ossining Rotarian George Camp Ossining Rotary Past President George Camp returns from a trip to Bangladesh, as a volunteer, to immunize children against polio

Dispatch from Dhaka:
"I went out again...into the slums of Dhaka. Although the people are extremely poor they have always been polite and quite often invited us into their homes for tea of fruit...But in the interest of finding the next child that had not been inoculated we politely refuse and move on to the next household. Today we visited almost 300 households and were able to find 28 children.

At one household we ran into a rather stern older man and he reused to allow his (I assume) grandchild to be inoculated. The volunteer and health care worker were about to give up when I offered to take a photo of the baby and then the family. He agreed and I felt that I was able to really help in this small way."

child who received polio vaccine in Bangladesh Since 1986, Rotary International's contributions and volunteer services, in conjunction with the UN, have reduced the incidence of polio in the world by 90%. Only four pockets of infection are left; Bihar is one of them.

It is Rotary's goal to make polio, like smallpox, a thing of the past. To help George bring small gifts to the children he is immunizing, donations can be made at Dorsey Funeral Home, 14 Emwilton Place.
